 Columbus believed he could find a shorter route to the Indies by sailing westward. It took Columbus ten years to find someone to believe him. In  August of 1492 Columbus set sail with three ships. Four months later they landed in the Bahamas. Columbus made four voyages to the New World and traveled to other islands in the Caribbean. He claimed  hundreds of islands and parts of South America for Spain.
